Matshwane means Honey Badger and, like the Honey Badger, symbolises tenacity. Matshwane International School embodies this spirit, serving the community as an English-medium, independent, co-educational institution welcoming children from diverse backgrounds.
Matshwane International School was founded in 1981 by Mervyn Palmer. It started off as a composite class in a small house on her property, still known as the ‘School House’. As enrollment grew, the need to find more classrooms saw it move several times, before it finally took ownership of its present location in 1993.
The word Matshwane means honey badger in Setswana. The tenacity and strong will reflected by this animal is typical of the Matshwane community, which has grown and thrived, in this very harsh environment! The Matshwane Ward in Maun is named after our school. It was the only group of buildings in the area at the time.
Matshwane International School has continued to serve the community as an English-medium, independent, co-educational school catering for children from a variety of ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. Learners as young as four years old enroll in Std 00 and continue their educational journey through to Standard Seven. Matshwane International is a proud member of the Conference of Heads of Private Schools in Botswana.
