Botswana Medical Aid Society is a not- for-profit healthcare Fund registered in 1969 as a Society under the Laws of the Republic of Botswana. This makes it the oldest medical aid service provider in the country. With over 53 years of existence Bomaid is years ahead of its competitors in terms of both product offering and medical aid administration.
The Fund was established by a consortium of companies which initially drew its membership from audit firms, mining companies, parastatals, and banking organizations. It has for close to 54 years grown to be an integral part of the lives of many and has become the medical aid to be trusted, ensuring security and peace of mind for its members. Bomaid has over time experienced substantial membership and is currently the largest open medical aid scheme in Botswana commanding approximately 54% of the market share amongst the open medical aid schemes.
The main objective of the Fund is to pool resources from members and other revenue sources for the sole purpose of assuring members access to quality and affordable health cover as well as to grow reserves that are intended to protect the Fund from business risks inherent in the industry. Being a society, subscribing members own the fund and as such no distribution of profits is made to any shareholder. Any surpluses made are ploughed back into the fund to either strengthen the reserves of the fund or be paid back to members in the form of claims.
